Annexed to the city of Calgary as early as 1906, Briar Hill was officially developed into a residential neighborhood in 1953. The Briar Hill has a very rich cultural heritage that spans several decades. Before it evolved into the well-planned residential real estate that we see today, Briar Hill was originally a part of a homestead that belonged to the Riley family. In those days, Briar Hill comprised Hillhurst, St. Andrews's Heights and University Heights and was home to Thomas Riley and his family who stayed in the region from 1888 to 1906 when the city of Calgary finally annexed the land.
